'Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them' this is rhyme and alliteration, this tells the reader that they are surrounded by the enemy and cannot escape the bombardment.
''the jaws of death'' this quotation shows personification and metephor, it shows they are going to be eaten, they are walking into a death trap. ''mouth of hell'' the word ''hell'' shows going into battle is a hard and scary experience. ''shattered'' this quotation shows that everything is broken and lost.
